Which Art Program is Right for You?

“I’ve had a passion for art since I was a child. But there are so many art and design programs to choose from! Which one is right for me?”

If you’ve ever wondered what to do with your creative talents, you’re definitely not alone! There are quite a few students who have been in this position. So today we're going to take a look at some of the most popular art industries and hopefully it'll give you an idea which one to choose!

Interior Design

Interior design is one of the fields that will get you a nine-to-five source of income. You can join a design firm or work in a large furniture showroom, but you can also set up your own business.

The work ranges from home staging, commercial design for restaurants and shops, to the design and decoration of homes for homeowners… The demand for interior design is great, and there are always opportunities for you to make a transition to related fields such as stage design, window-display designer, or furniture/material supplier.

Architectural Studies

Among all of the areas in art and design, architecture is one of the top choices in terms of future employment. In a country like Canada where immigration brings in a constant influx of people, the number of newly-built housing is consistently reaching record highs, which means that the demand for architectural designers is also growing! Canada's large-scale architectural design companies are too many to count. And after accumulating a certain level of experience, you will have the option to set up your own studio.

Fashion Design

Look over here if you want to be the next Coco Chanel or Alexander Wang! Fashion design tugs at the heartstrings of many fashionable and adventurous souls. Fashion design will always be in business unless humans have decided to all go naked one day! With the stagnation of the Canadian economy, people’s purchasing power has decreased and the fashion industry’s employment in Canada has declined slightly. However, China is the time when fashion e-commerce is booming. There will be many opportunities to work in China after obtaining your degree.

Illustration

The illustration major has also been a hot topic among Chinese students in the past two years. Many students are influenced by illustration art in South Korea and have a great passion for this profession. However, as far as Canada is concerned, the illustration-related industries are not as rich as the United States or Asia. Many graduates are then engaged in graphic design work. Supply exceeds demand and competition is fierce.

Animation

Sheridan College's animation design is one of the most famous art majors in Canada! Students who have graduated successfully often do not need to spend a lot of time looking for work. Many of the talented animation artists working for Disney or DreamWorks are Sheridan graduates.

This program is relatively difficult to get into, and there is a lot to learn. But in the past, Lovefunart has successfully helped students get into this program. Just be prepared – you’ll have to work very hard! Of course, it is also very rewarding, so if you think animation might be right for you, don’t hesitate!

Fine Arts

Fine art is the most long-standing program in art schools. It is art in its pure form, and there are fewer restrictions about what you want to create! The employment of fine art is relatively limited, and many graduates work in art museums or art-related commercial establishments while they continue to paint and attend art fairs and exhibitions. The most successful paintings make it into professional art galleries, and there are a lot of them in Toronto. Each gallery has their unique style of art that they represent, so start doing your research!

“What if the one I like the most doesn’t seem to guarantee the best chances at future employment?”

Our advice: GO FOR IT.

If you know where your dream lies, then don’t let the restrictions scare you. As long as you love what you do and put effort into it, you will be successful!
